Plot: Chow Yun-Fat
plays a very laid back policeman that then gets teamed up with Conan
Lee which is very much the complete opposite. A gang of triad gangsters
are fighting over a missing drugs shipment and Yun-Fat and Conan find
themselves in the thick of it all.
Overview: Chow
relies mainly on guns, which has always been a big part in most of his
films while Conan takes on opponents taking the unarmed option, which
also suits him, best I think. At the start of the film after the partnership
is brought together there is mostly a comedy aspect to the film. At
one point very early on in the film we see Chow Yun-Fat eat raw eggs
– several in fact. Then onto about right in the middle of the film we
see Chow beat up yes literally beat up Nina Li, just to name some of
the things he does to her, he makes he fall through a glass table, kicks
her half way across the room, smothers cocaine in her face and then
nearly drowns her in the bath well dunks her head underwater for a bit.
When Chow Yun-Fat was asked why it was put in the film he said, he did
not like filming it but the producers felt it fitted in with the film.
Whether or not you think it does ill leave it up to you. Anyway later
on, near the end we see a car chase, between Chow and Conan against
who they are after. One thing I just love about this scene is Chows
car is a mini! What adds to it ever more apart from that it is a mini
is that while Chow drives, Conan is holding on top for his life! Move
over Italian Job! You’ll have to watch it to understand fully. After
that there is the final showdown, I don’t want to give too much away
but all I will tell is that is one of the best films of that era!
My Thoughts: This
was one of the first Chow Yun-Fat films I have ever seen, the other
being Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, having heard so much about Chow
Yun-Fat I thought that this film would be a very good watch. And it
was! It lived up to everything people said about him. Not only that
but Conan Lee is also great. Tiger on the Beat is an mix of action and
comedy blended marvelously by Lau Kar Leung, the partnership between
Chow and Conan is excellent and very good to watch.
