Spooky Encounters

Director: Ricky Lau

Po (Sammo Hung) is the usually mischievous busy body, who spends his days with his Sifu (Lam Ching-Ying) and his fellow student, Hoi (Mang Hoi). Po was placed in an arranged marriage at birth, when the time is right Po will marry Little Chu. Little Chu is the daughter of Mr. Chu (Teddy Yip). Mr. Chu is the owner a popular Tea House, although he dislikes Po as he always ends up fighting with one of his customers. This customer, Mr. Sze is constantly harassing Little Chu, reason why Bo ends up causing trouble over him.

Po is given the challenge to prove himself to Mr. Chu. Before the Dragon Boat Festival Po has to deliver Mr. Chu, 60 Cakes, 60 Catties of Mushrooms, 600 Chickens or he'll break off their engagement!

Po and Hoi decide to set up a Congee stand, although they find out that another Congee restaurant opens right across from them. Bo thinks of given up until a women buys some congee of him. Bo must be unlucky, when he checks the money he was given, it turns out to be paper money, for the dead. "Oh great, my only sale tonight and it was to a ghost!".

Bo Pursues this ghost seeking vengeance, although he ends up taking pity on the ghost. The ghost, Hung spends her time looking after her ill mother, who is blind and isn't aware that her daughter is a ghost. Bo pretends to be Hung's cousin (the reason they traveled to this village was in search of there cousin).

Hoi meets Hung the next day with Bo and they ask her for help to get rich so he can get those gifts before the festival. They come up with a plan to have Hung pose as Little Chu and seduce Mr. Sze. While seducing him Hung will throw out his priceless antiques to Bo and Hoi. Although Sze's friend 'The Priest' figures out there plan...

My thoughts on Spooky Encounters? I love this film, this one of the first Sammo films I had seen when I started collecting Asian flicks. Just the manic adventures of Sammo Hung, Mang Hoi and Lam Ching-Ying is top class material. Even the strange dream of Sammo getting stoned with some chinese vampires always makes me laugh!

It's good to see that Lam Ching-Ying was casted as his stereotype teacher/taoist priest role, because no one play it better. He even had the best ghost fighting weapon around, the ying yang yoyo! His character is the typical stubborn teacher, who believes the rules are meant to be followed, example when Sammo is protecting the ghost, that's a no no! Lam Ching-Ying puts him in the place with one heck of a punch!

Final thoughts, top class Kung Fu / Horror (well I wouldn't call it horror, because none of these are real scary, like people get nightmares from Mr. Vampire?! Maybe Lam's eyebrows are wacky, but they aint that bad!). Sammo Hung, Lam Ching-Ying & Mang Hoi = 100 minutes of fun!
