favorite Police Story.
Plot:
Jackie goes to China to work undercover with Michelle Yeoh to bust a
major drug dealer.
Comment:
This was the first Police Story not directed by Jackie Chan, but Stanley
Tong really delivers the goods. This is the best of their three collaborations
so far, the other two being Police Story 4: First Strike and Rumble
in the Bronx. As always, with Jackie Chan and the Police Story series,
Supercop has top class action. As its mainly choreographed by Stanley
its slightly different to the usual Jackie Chan action, but more on
that later. The comedy is hilarious and much better than in the first
two films. And of course this was the comeback film of Michelle Yeoh.
What a comeback it is.
The action, as I've already said, is great. There's a one on one, a
prison breakout, loads of explosions, a shootout and a well OTT finale.
Which has one of the most astonishing stunts Jackies ever pulled off.
The one on one is Jackie Vs Sam Wong. Its a bit short but has a couple
of funny moments. It looks fairly realistic too. Unfortunately though
this is the only proper, full blown fist fight in the film.
When Jackie has to bust Yuen Wah out of a prison camp, he lets rip with
a cool looking combo of kicks. Then Yuen Wah looks at him and Jackie
pulls off a great looking stance. Then once they've ran up a very steep
hill, they rope slide down. And its the biggest rope slide i've ever
seen.
The middle of the film action piece is set at a drug lords jungle base
in Thailand. It has explosions, explosions and then some more explosions.
The shooty bits in between the explosions go from violent to funny,
but lack any sort of flair.
The finale, unusually for a Jackie Chan film, has hardly any fighting.
Just 10 minutes of stunts. Michelle and Jackie do stunt after stunt
each trying to out do each other. The two big ones are; Michelle jumping
a bike onto a moving train (she's on a wire though). The other big one
is Jackie hanging onto a ladder under a helicopter and then being flown
around Kuala Lumpar. Its a quite a site to behold ad it might make you
dizzy! Keep an eye out for Ken Lo and Alan Sit on top of the train.
The comedy is so funny, there are many memorable lines. My fave being
when Michelle asks if Jackie has been taught controlled breathing, he
replies, 'No, I'm to delicate for that'. Doesn't sound to funny there
but on screen its great, Jackie's face is hilarious. There's also a
wonderful set piece when Uncle Bill pretends to be Jackie's mum and
Michelle his sister. I won't give away anymore, but its a very funny
sequence. Maggie Cheung is not in a lot of the film, but when Jackie
goes to Malaysia, she's there too! Cue lots of comedy regarding Jackie
trying to hide his cover. Its all very funny situation comedy.
I must make a comment on Jackie's acting in this movie. I haven't enjoyed
a performance from him quite as much as i do in this film. He won a
Taiwan Golden Horse award for it and deservedly so. This was the first
film Jackie shot in sync sound and his timing in the comedy is perfect.
The expressions he pulls are great as well.
Overall, I really love this film. Its one of my fave Jackie Chan films.
My only gripe with it is that there isn't a proper environment fight
or Jackie Vs a group fight. Both of these type of fights happen in the
other Police Story's, but not this one. Never mind though, its still
an incredibly enjoyable movie and one of Jackie's funniest HK movies.
