Infernal Affairs

Director: Andrew
Lau & Alan Mak
Producer:
Andrew Lau
The 2002 Mega hit movie,
Infernal Affairs. Ming (Andy
Lau)
is a Triad Mole introduced to the police force at the age of 18. With
Ming reaching 'Criminal Investigation Bureau', inspiring the police
force with his knowledge of the triads. Although it all comes back on
him, when he is assigned to do a drug bust on his own Triad Boss, Sam
(Eric Tsang). Sam is the
only person who knows that he is a undercover triad.
A similar story for our
other leading man Yan (Tony
Leung). Yan, who was supposedly 'expelled' from the police academy.
His really put undercover as Triad, who leeks information to Inspector
Wong (Anthony Wong).
Inspector Wong being the only person who knows Yans real identity. Yan
seems very intelligent as he leeks valuable information to the Inspector
Wong through Morse code. Ming catches on to there use Morse Code and
studies it to his advantage.
Inspector Wong and Sam
both seem to be the piggy's in the middle. Both of them are playing
the same game and putting a great deal of trust into Ming and Yan. Although
they both turn out to be victims to there own games. As
the film progresses each of the main characters seem to forget their
real identities and it shows off a much more darker sides of both Yan
and Ming.
Both men even have their
own honeyz. Yan attends frequently to a psychiatrists
(Kelly Chen) about his sleeping problems. Ming is married to a amateur
novelist, Mary (Sammi Cheng).
Mary throughout the film talks about a novel she is writing about. She
has set it on an idea of a man with 28 different personalities. Although
you soon find out that she has based the book on her husband...
I'm no longer going to
go into great deal about the films story. Andrew Lau has give us another
hit film. the film is packed with exceptional scenery taking from a
rooftop building. More amazingly filmed scenes is when Yan is pursuing
Ming as he leaves the cinema, after a meeting with Sam. The scene shows
great tension as Yan gains, closer and closer to Ming. The scene soon
having you on the edge of your seat as Yans mobile phone going off.
Trust me you need to watch the scene to know what I'm talking about.
Another well done scene
is where Ming is sitting in his office with the now deceased Inspector
Wongs Phone, Ming begins to call the last number that was dialled by
Inspector Wong. The number turns out to be Yans. Yan looking at his
phone with a blank face as he answers. The scene is greatly enhanced
with the excellent music playing in the background. Just outstanding
work from Andrew Lau and Alan Mak.
The final thought, Andrew
Lau's directing skills seem to be capable in genre of film. For example
The Stormriders, The Young and Dangerous and The Avenging Fist. He handled
these films with ease and made them hits. Infernal Affairs is another
hit film, it is most likely king of the hill in my opinion. Now...bring
on the sequels!
