Encounters Of The Spooky Kind

Director: Sammo Hung

Sammo Hung stars a ‘Bold Cheung’, he claims that he is the bravest man in village, some people even call him courageous Cheung. On many attempts, Chuengs friends are trying to trick him and scare him senseless, but he always comes out on top. Chueng works as a carriage driver for the Mayor.

The Mayor, Mr Tam is a bit of a smutty character, having Cheung drive him to the local brothels or to visit his mistress. One day whilst Chueng waits for Tam he decides to pay a visit to his wife, although he notices a couple people peeping through the window outside his home. Chueng scares them off and decides to peep himself, only to see his wife getting it on with some one!

Chueng flips his lid and smashes through the door, only to see that the mystery man is gone and his wife is in bed, by herself. Chuengs wife goes mad at him for thinking up such awful accusation. Yet Cheung knows something’s wrong, he even found the culprits shoe.

We soon find out it was actually Mr. Tam ‘hopping on the good foot and doing the bad thing’ with Chuengs wife. Mr. Tam is worried in case Cheung lets out his secret to the public about his visits to the local brothel.

Mr. Tam decides that the only way to stop Cheung is having him killed, although he wants it done clean, so clean that no one will no that he was even there!

Mr. Tams assistant (Tai Bo) suggests a Taoist priest (Peter Chan) he knows and he would be willing to do the job at a price. The assistant meets up with the evil priest and pays him two taels of gold for the job. Alongside the evil priest is his little brother (Chung Fat), although he refuses to do the job, as he only believes in using Taoism for good, not for bad. The two brothers begin to argue and the good priest leaves.

The good priest decides to make good out of his brothers evil plans and prevents Chueng from getting the chop!

The film soon turns into a fabulous mix of horror, comedy and drama. Even the late Lam Ching-Ying makes an appearance as a strict, but cool police chief along with a group of wimp police officers, which injects more humour into the movie. We also get scenes of Sammo sleeping with a corpse. Also Sammo fighting a Chinese vampire. Although the highlight of the movie was the ending fight between the Taoist priests, its truly a great end to the movie.
