Similar in style to the Lucky Stars films from later in the 80s.
This movie is about a team of pickpockets, Master Kim Ming (Lau Sek
Huen) and daughter, Ann, plus Rice Pot (Sammo)
and Chimney (Frankie Chan) who
make their living using the five finger discount on Hong Kong's unsuspecting
inhabitants. They are doing ok until Chimney and Rice Pot pickpocket
some diamonds from a Triad boss named Chou Meng Sheng (Chan
Lung with a cowboy hat) thinking they are working on behalf of an
undercover cop (Deannie Yip). Chimney and Rice Pot soon find out that
they've been duped, and not only that, Boss Chou and his boys are out
to get them! The movie is a fairly frivolous tale with a good deal of
comedy, some of it funny, and a little bit of drama to keep things moving
along. but it's when the movie shifts into action that it really takes
off.
There are a few fight
scenes sprinkled throughout the movie, all showing Sammo's expert touch.
Most of the action is saved for the final reel though The choreography
is tremendous, and Sammo is in great physical form. There are a good
deal of comedic scenes; one at the disco, where Sammo is trying to get
acquanted with a woman, Frankie gets beat down and Sammo steps in to
straighten things out ; quite a few with the police officer ( played
by Richard Ng); and of course, the actual scenes where Sammo and Frankie
show us the fine art of pick pocketing.
Another fight takes
place later on, but isn't very long, about 20 seconds or so. The end
of the movie has what everyone expects from a Sammo movie; about 15
to 20 minutes of some incredible and bloody action.
Sammo's terrible taste
in clothes (the Mickey Mouse shiny tracksuit in this movie must set
a new bad taste record).
By the way in the scene
where Dick Wei is doing a sweep kick followed by a spinning heel kick
and all while Sammo does a backhand spring watch out for the stunt double-
it's YUEN BIAO!
This is a good movie
in my opinion and worth buying.
